The Hardcovers:

Trees was the fifth Golden Guide published. The first hardcover printing of Trees has the number 594 on the spine of the DJ. No number on the book itself. Copyright 1952 by Simon & Schuster, Inc., and Artists and Writers Guild, Inc. Printed in the U.S.A. by Western Printing and Lithographing Company. The book itself has Tree decorated boards. The front endpaper is titled Growth Of A Tree. And the back endpaper is titled Uses Of Wood. The cover states 130 Trees In Full Color. The title page states 130 Paintings In Full Color. A first printing will have an A on the inside flap of the DJ. Price on flap is $1.50. 158 pages. Listed as a Golden Nature Guide.

The next version of Trees states 143 Trees In Full Color on the DJ. The title page still states 130 Paintings In Full Color. Everything else is the same except for the printing and price. On the inside flap of the DJ is an E and a price of $1.95. Published by Simon & Schuster, Inc.

A revised hardcover edition of Trees states 143 Trees In Full Color on the DJ and 143 Species In Color on the title page. The endpapers have been replaced by the animal decorated endpapers. © Copyright 1952, 1956, by Simon & Schuster Inc. The printing code is an I located on page 160. The foreword states: In the present revision, nine pages of information have been added, including scientific names.

I have yet to find a small Golden Press hardcover edition. But one probably exists.

The first revised edition also exists in a large (5 ¼ by 7 ¾ inch) hardcover. The number on the back cover is 63509. © Copyright 1952, 1956 by Golden Press, Inc. Exact same information as the Simon & Schuster revised editions, but published by Golden Press.

The Softcovers:

The first softcover edition of Trees probably was issued about the same time as the HC edition. Numbered 494 on the spine. Copyright 1952 by Simon & Schuster, Inc. The cover states 130 Trees In Full Color. The title page states 130 Paintings In Full Color. 160 pages with the addition of logo page and dummy title page in front. The tree decorated endpapers follow that. A first printing will have A100100 at bottom left corner of the inside front cover. No price listed on the cover. The inside front cover and inside back cover again has the new Big Four logo.

The next softcover edition of Trees states 143 Trees In Full Color on the cover and 130 Paintings In Color on the title page. Number 494 on the spine. The Big Four logo is gone from the endpapers. But it still has the dummy title page in front and the tree decorated endpapers. The inside front cover lists 8 Golden Guides in print and two more in preparation. Printing code of F100100 is on the inside front cover.

The first revised softcover edition of Trees states 143 Trees In Full Color on the cover and 143 Species In Color on the title page. The dummy title page and the tree decorated endpapers are gone. © Copyright 1952, 1956, by Simon & Schuster, Inc. Number 494 on the spine and the cover. (shown as 494:100) Printing code of L is on page 160.

The first softcover Golden Press edition of Trees has the number 24494 on the spine, along with a cover price of $1.00. From the copyright page: Revised Edition, Twenty-Fourth Printing, 1963. From the foreword: In the present revision, nine pages of information have been added, including scientific names.A X is on page 160.

The first cover (text) change to Trees has a $1.95 cover price. ISBN 0-307-24494-6 located on the back cover. Printing code shows 3A 3B 3C 3D 3E on page 160. Listed as a Golden Guide on the cover and a Golden Nature Guide on the inside front cover.

A completely new cover for Trees was issued in 1987. © Copyright 1987, 1956, 1952 by Western Publishing Company, Inc. From the forword: We are grateful to Dr. James L. Luteyn, Curator, the New York Botanical Garden, for his help with the current revision, which incorporates many changes in nomenclature, classification, and geographical distributions. Because the sticker has a gold background it scans poorly. One thing I have found that's consistent with Golden Guides is the printing history of the book when they put a New And Revised sticker on the front cover. With this sticker on the cover they start the letters with A again, which denotes the first revised printing. Page 160 has the letter code ABCDE.
