Tutorial Of First 18 Titles

The first 18 Golden Guides were published in both softcover and hardcover. All hardcovers have a dustjacket except Everglades. Here's a rundown in the order they were published. The first ten are Golden Nature Guides.

Birds

Published in 1949. The first printing has no number on the spine for the hardcover, but was later numbered 590. The first paperback may not have a number either. It was later numbered 490. The cover lists 118 photos. Later editions have illos of 112, 125 and 129 birds.
In a hardcover with DJ I have 112 Birds, 118 Paintings and 125 Birds. The 125 Birds is revised and exists in Simon & Shuster and Golden Press editions. A Permaseal hardcover edition exists that was issued without a DJ, only in a Simon & Shuster edition.

Flowers

Published in 1950. This is the first Golden Guide to have a number on the spine. Paperback is 491. Hardcover is #491. Later HC editions were numbered 591.
The hardcover with DJ exists in Simon & Schuster and Golden Press editions. A Permaseal hardcover edition exists that was issued without a DJ, only in a Simon & Shuster edition. I have yet to find a revised edition in hardcover.

Insects

Published in 1951. Paperback number is 492.
The hardcover I own is numbered 592 on the spine. It is a revised edition and published by Simon & Schuster. I have yet to find a non-revised edition in HC, but I'm sure one exists. There's a Permaseal hardcover edition that was issued without a DJ, only in a Simon & Schuster edition. Spine number is 492.

Stars

Published in 1951. Paperback number is 493. Hardcover is 593. There's a Permaseal hardcover edition that was issued without a DJ. Spine number is 493. In a hardcover with DJ both a Simon & Schuster edition and Golden Press edition exist. The Golden Press edition is revised.

Trees

Published in 1952. Paperback number is 494. Hardcover is 594. The cover lists 130 Trees on the cover and title page. The next edition has 143 paintings listed on the cover and 130 Paintings on the title page. The next edition lists 143 Trees on the cover and the title page.
In a hardcover with DJ only Simon & Schuster editions exist. Later editions were revised. No Permaseal hardcover edition exists that I'm aware of.

Reptiles And Amphibians

Published in 1953. Paperback number is 495. Hardcover is 595. The hardcover with DJ exists in Simon & Schuster and Golden Press editions. A revised Simon & Schuster edition exists. The Golden Press edition only exists in a revised edition.

Seashores

Published in 1955. Paperback number is 496. Hardcover is 596. The hardcover with DJ only exists in a Simon & Schuster edition.

Mammals

Published in 1955. Paperback number is 497. Hardcover is 597. The hardcover with DJ only exists in a Simon & Schuster edition.

Fishes

Paperback number is 498. Hardcover is 598. Simon and Schuster editions were published in 1956. Golden Press editions were published in 1955. This is quite confusing. I'm pretty sure the Simon & Schuster editions were published before the Golden Press editions. But the dates on these editions doesn't help my theory hold up. Perhaps there were some copyright issues involved with this book when Golden Press took over the publishing of these books.
The hardcover with DJ exists in Simon & Schuster and Golden Press editions.

Rocks And Minerals

Published in 1957. Paperback number is 499. Hardcover number is 599. The hardcover with DJ was published by Simon & Schuster. A Golden Press edition may exist, but I haven't found one yet.

The next three books have a different numbering sequence. And the publishing date on Photography precedes Rocks And Minerals. Here's a rundown:

Photography

Published in 1956. Paperback number is 406. Hardcover is 506. The first Golden Handbook. The hardcover with DJ only exists in a Simon & Schuster non-revised edition.

Weather

Published in 1957. Paperback number is 407. Hardcover is 507. The eleventh Golden Nature Guide. The hardcover with DJ only exists in a Simon & edition.

Zoology

Published in 1958. Paperback number is 408. Hardcover is 508. The first Golden Science Guide. The hardcover with DJ only exists in a Simon & edition.

The next five books have a different numbering sequence. They are all Regional or Travel guides. Here's a rundown:
